Inside the guide

A decision framework you can use.

  • A clear distinction among deterministic automation, AI assistance, and agentic work
  • A business gate for deciding when an agent is justified
  • A minimum safe operating envelope for identity, data, tools, actions, resources, and environment
  • A controlled architecture, adversarial evaluation model, four-stage adoption path, and 60-day pilot blueprint

Why this matters now

Popular topic, calibrated evidence.

The guide pairs current market attention with public research and practical controls. These are context points, not promises of results.

40%

of enterprise applications were projected to include task-specific agents by the end of 2026, up from under 5% in 2025.

Gartner

~1 in 3

structured computer-use tasks still fail for leading agents on the OSWorld benchmark.

Common questions

Before you download

What makes an AI system an agent?

An agent uses a model to choose how to progress toward a goal, selects among allowed tools, observes results, and adapts across multiple steps. A chatbot, summary, or fixed workflow with one model call is not automatically an agent.

When should an organization use an agent instead of automation?

An agent is worth considering when the goal is bounded and valuable, the work contains real variability that defeats sensible rules, the available tools and authority can be constrained, outcomes can be evaluated, and early actions are reversible or reviewable.

How much autonomy should the first agent receive?

Very little. Start in observe or draft mode. Add selected actions only after representative and adversarial evaluation demonstrates acceptable quality, access behavior, policy compliance, cost, recovery, and human oversight.
